I was not really a fan of this chapter during my first reading, but as I am now 57 years old-I was 33 when I first read the book-I have the kinds of related experiences which are almost unavoidable over such a long stretch of well-lived life. Despite being set in colonial India, the novel Gora is about facing down and defying the colonial system. The novel also shows how colonial misrule affects both working-class rural Indians and middle-class urban Indians. In this book, not only does Tagore criticize British rule but also demonstrates that Indian nationalism would need to encompass much more than a conflict between one religion or one type of politics. Gora becomes an embodiment of Tagore's idea of a diversified and broad humanist nationalism via the journey of its hero to discover his genuine Indian identity. This dissatisfaction is manifested in the novel's central themes of independence and the existence of a distinct national identity. At the turn of the 20th century, disconnect with the repressive British rule in India was churning everyone’s mind. Understanding the spirit of the era in which Gora was written is a prerequisite for appreciating its plot. The novel has strong characters which include Gora, Paresh Babu, Binoy, Mohim and Sucharita.
